Up Apartment Fire - 93 Broad St ~ 11/09/08

On Sunday, November 9, 2008 at 02:25 hours, Lyons Town Ambulance along with the Lyons Police Department was dispatched for a reported burn victim at 93 Broad St. Upon the police department's arrival, a working fire was declared. At this time, Lyons Fire was dispatched with Engine Company 6 and Truck Company 1 taking the assignment under the direction of Chief Witt and Assistant Chiefs Paliotti, Darcangelis & Rios. While units were responding an update was broadcasted reporting victims on the roof of the structure.

Upon Chief Witt's arrival, a working fire was declared in a 2 1/2 story, brick, multifamily apartment building. Command requested a RIT Team from the Newark Fire Department bringing in Engine 15 as heavy fire was showing from the front of the structure. The crew of Engine 6 immediately utilized ground ladders to remove the victims from the roof. Additional crews darkened the fire from the outside and then conducted an aggressive interior attack while further crews searched for additional victims. Truck Company operations consisted of laying a supply and roof ops. The fire was contained to the upper and lower apartments and was declared under control within 20 minutes.

Lyons Town Ambulance transported the initial burn victim to an awaiting Mercy Flight MedEvac where she was transported to Rochester's Strong Hospital Burn Unit. At the time of posting, the patient is still listed in guarded condition. The fire is currently under investigation by the Wayne County Cause and Origin Team.

It should be noted that a 9 year old child from an adjacent apartment is credited in the extinguishment of the burn victim. This 9 year old is to receive a "Certificate of Heroism" at the Lyons Elementary School awards ceremony scheduled for November 21, 2008 by the fire department.

LFD was further assisted on location by the Lyons Town Ambulance, Lyons Police Department and the Wayne County Sheriff's Office. The assignment was back in-service at 06:07 hours as crews assisted the fire investigators.
